Services of Remembrance
Services of Remembrance have been held in Portsmouth since at least 1948,
traditionally held the weekend before the anniversary of the loss of the ship.
In 2019, a memorial plaque was unveiled by HRH The Princess Royal at St.Ann’s Church HM Naval Base Portsmouth to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the
loss of HMS Royal Oak. In 2024, a memorial obelisk was unveiled by sons and
daughters of men who lost their fathers in the sinking of HMS Royal Oak.
The obelisk is located outside Victory Gate at The Hard.
The service of remembrance in Portsmouth will take place at 11am on Saturday 11 October 2025 at St. Barbara's Church, HMS Excellent, Whale Island.
Further details will be provided nearer the date but you can register
your interest by using the "Contact" page of this website.
A service of remembrance also takes place at Scapa Flow on the
morning of 14 October each year. It is coordinated by the Royal Navy
with the assistance of the Royal British Legion, Kirkwall, the
Royal Naval Association, Kirkwall and the local community.
